The veil of the Muslim woman & her prayer garment, by the Shaykh of Islām, Ibn Tayymiyāh رحمه الله , book commented and verified by the Shaykh Al-Albani رحمه الله.

This epistle is undoubtedly one of the most important writings of Shaykh Al-Islām . Indeed, despite its modest volume, it concentrates abundant knowledge characterizing the extent of this scholar's knowledge.

The theme of this epistle is the type of clothing that every man and woman should wear during the performance of prayer.

The author has demonstrated, with supporting evidence, that the garment in question is not simply that which a man usually wears to cover his nudity outside of his prayers. Moreover, he indicated that it is a question of something else; it is a garment which would also cover the shoulders , out of consideration for prayer and out of respect for its sacredness and not because the shoulders are part of the intimate parts to be preserved from the gaze of others. To support this statement, he mentioned several hadiths , including the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

لا يصلين أحدكم في الثوب الواحد ليس على عاتقه منه شىء
“Let none of you perform prayer in a single garment unless part of it covers (completely) both shoulders.”

This question will remain of great importance as long as the majority of people continue to pray in a shirt that barely covers their shoulders, inattentive to the following words of ALLAH - The Most High :

خذوا زينتكم عند كل مسجد
{Wear your adornment (your clothes) in each place of Salat.}

This epistle obviously also speaks of the clothing of the Muslim woman, which she wears to hide her during her prayer and outside of it.
